Overview

Tsavo East: big, bold and beautifully wild
Some parks are famous for a view. Tsavo East is famous for scale. Its vast plains, red-dust roads and endless horizons make it one of the biggest wildlife reserves in the world, and one of the most atmospheric.
This is the land of Tsavo's "red elephants", their skin painted rust by the iron-rich soil, and the home of the infamous maneless lions whose legend inspired books and films. Add buffalo, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, leopard, and a wealth of birdlife along the Galana River and at Aruba Dam, and you have a safari that feels raw and unspoilt.
Best of all, it's remarkably accessible. From Diani, you can be on your first game drive the same afternoon, making Tsavo East ideal for a short break from the beach or the first chapter of a longer Kenya adventure.
Whether you're a first-timer wanting a quick taste of safari or a seasoned traveller who prefers space and solitude, we'll shape your Tsavo trip around you.

Wide open, wonderfully wild. Tsavo East rewards the curious. Here are the sights and experiences that make it unforgettable.

Things to Do

Red Elephants
Watch great herds dust-bathe and turn the colour of the earth itself. Photographers love the contrast of rust-red giants against green bush and blue sky.
Aruba Dam
In the dry season, the dam is a magnet for wildlife. Elephants, buffalo, zebra and dozens of bird species gather to drink, making it one of the best waterhole spots in the park.
The Legendary Lions of Tsavo
Tsavo's lions are famously maneless, and the region is known for the two man-eaters of the 1890s that halted a railway's construction. A guide who knows the story makes the landscape come alive.
Galana River & Lugard Falls
Follow the river through the park and look out for hippos, crocodiles and water birds. Lugard Falls, with its rocky rapids, is a beautiful stop.
Mudanda Rock
A long rocky ridge with a natural waterhole below, perfect for watching elephants at close range from a safe vantage point.
Birdlife & Plains Game
Giraffe, zebra, buffalo, gerenuk, lesser kudu and a huge variety of birds, including many eastern species not found on the western circuit.
Lodge & Camp Stays
Choose from comfortable options such as Ashnil Aruba Lodge, Satao Camp, Manyatta Camp, Voi Safari Lodge, Lion Hill Lodge or Sentrim Tsavo Camp, with waterhole views, dinner under the stars and sunrise game drives on your doorstep.

Free Ask Question?

Can I do Tsavo East as a day trip?

Yes. We offer a 1-day safari from the coast with lunch, ideal if you're short on time. That said, staying at least one night lets you enjoy two game drives, including early-morning light, and a sundowner at the lodge.

How many days do I need?

Two days and one night is our most popular choice. If you'd like more, combine Tsavo East with Tsavo West, Amboseli or the Taita Hills for a 3 to 5-day adventure [confirm current itineraries].

When is the best time to go?

Tsavo East is a year-round destination. The dry seasons, June to October and January to February, are best for wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around water. Green-season months are quieter, with lower rates and lush scenery.

Can you customise a trip?

That's what we do. Tell us your dates, interests and budget, and we'll craft a safari that fits, from budget-friendly to luxury.
