Overview

Mombasa: the island city that shaped the coast
For over a thousand years, ships have been sailing into Mombasa. Arab traders, Portuguese fleets, Omani sultans and British colonists all left their mark, and the result is a city unlike any other in East Africa. Carved wooden doors line narrow Old Town alleys. Spice-sellers call from market stalls. A 16th-century fortress, now UNESCO-listed, still watches over the harbour.
Then there's the everyday Mombasa: rich Swahili biryani, sugarcane juice on the roadside, the roar of the Likoni ferry and a warmth you'll feel within minutes of arriving. Whether you're a first-time visitor, a cruise passenger with a few hours to spare or a beach-holiday guest ready for a day of culture, we'll turn Mombasa into a story worth telling.

Every corner has a story. From a 430-year-old fort to a crocodile-filled sanctuary, Mombasa packs centuries of culture and a surprising amount of wildlife into one compact city. These are the stops our guests rave about.

Things to Do

Fort Jesus (UNESCO World Heritage Site) The Portuguese built this coral-stone fortress in 1591 to guard the harbour, and it's been fought over ever since. Walk the ramparts, explore the museum and imagine the centuries of trade and conflict that passed through these gates.
Old Town & Spice Market Wander narrow lanes lined with intricately carved doors and Swahili, Arab and Indian architecture. Stop at the market for cardamom, cloves and fresh tropical fruit, and let your guide show you the stories hiding in plain sight.
Akamba Woodcarving Centre Watch master carvers shape ebony, mahogany and olive wood by hand at one of the biggest craft co-operatives in Kenya. If something catches your eye, you'll be buying direct from the artist.
Haller Park A former cement quarry turned thriving wildlife sanctuary, home to giraffes, hippos, buffalo, crocodiles and rare coastal plants. Come for the afternoon giraffe feeding and stay for the quiet trails.
The Tusks (Pembe za Ndovu) Mombasa's most photographed landmark, a pair of giant crossed tusks arching over Moi Avenue. Built in 1952, they're a quick and iconic stop on any city tour.
Old Hindu Temple A calm, colourful stop that tells the story of Mombasa's Indian community and how deeply it shaped the city's culture and cuisine.
Funzi Mangrove Tour Swap city streets for quiet waterways. A day among mangrove channels, birdlife and fishing communities south of Mombasa. Ideal as a contrast to the city.

Free Ask Question?

Can I visit Mombasa from Diani in a day?

Yes, and it's one of our most popular excursions. We'll pick you up from your hotel at about 8am and drive to Mombasa via the Likoni ferry, then meet your local guide for a full day of sights, lunch and shopping. We bring you back in time for sunset on the beach.

What's included in the Mombasa city tour?

Your private vehicle, English-speaking guide and hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with all listed stops. Lunch, Fort Jesus entry and personal spending may be extra depending on the package. We'll spell it out clearly when you book

How much time do I need?

A full day gives you the best of Mombasa without rushing. If you only have a few hours, for example on a cruise call or before a flight, we'll build a shorter route around the highlights.

Can you collect us from the airport or cruise port?

Yes. We can meet you at Moi International Airport or the port and get you straight into your tour, or transfer you on afterwards.

Can I combine Mombasa with a safari or beach stay?

Absolutely. Mombasa pairs beautifully with Diani beach days, and you can add Tsavo, Amboseli or the Masai Mara. We can even arrange flights to the Mara from Ukunda or Mombasa.

Can you customise the tour?

That's what we do. Love food? We'll add a Swahili cooking stop. Into history? We'll go deeper at Fort Jesus. Travelling with kids? We'll spend longer at Haller Park.
