A selected summary of lodges and camps in Tsavo National Park can be found herehere:
These alternate with acacia forests, rocky gorges, individual rock groups and islet mountains. Seasonal rivers in the southern part are Voi River and Mbololo River. Permanent water is provided by the Athi River and Galana River (this river is created above the Lugard Waterfalls by the confluence of the Athi and Tsavo Rivers). Along the rivers there are narrow gallery forests. Standing waters can be found at Mundanda Rock (natural damming by rock wall), as well as at Aruba Dam. There are also smaller water holes, often created by elephants. A flat and extensive lava ridge, the Yatta Plateau, runs along the western border in the east of the Athi River, it is the longest lava field in the world.
The park is characterized by its special biodiversity of large animals. Tsavo is best known for its large elephant population (the largest in Kenya) and its lions. The “red elephants of Tsavo” owe their colour to the red earth in the national park. With this they powder themselves in dust baths or mud baths. Male lions in the Tsavo usually have no mane or only a very thin mane, this is interpreted as adaptation to the hot climate.
Typical Tsavo species are those that survive particularly well in relatively dry savannah regions, such as giraffe gazelles, East African oryx antelopes and Grant’s gazelles. Other large hoofed animals are black rhinoceroses, plains zebras, Cape buffalo, hartebeest, lesser kudu, eland antelope, waterbuck, impala, giraffe, Kirk dikdik. Besides lions, cheetahs and leopards are two other large cat species found in the area. Green monkey, white-throated monkey and yellow baboon represent the monkey species. Nile crocodiles and hippopotami live at the waterholes like the “Galana River”. Among the 600 bird species, the Somali Ostrich stands out as the largest species. In the adjacent Tsavo West National Park there are Masai ostriches.
