Tsavo East National Park
With an area of 11,747 square kilometres, the eastern part is about 2,000 km2 larger than the western part. The areas to the north of the Galana River, which is a permanent water source, about two thirds of the park, are inaccessible to visitors. The park is characterised by grass and bush savannahs and semi-desert steppes. These alternate with acacia forests, gorges, individual rock groups and island mountains. Seasonal rivers in the southern part are the Voi River and the Mbololo River. The Athi River and the Galana River are permanent waterways. The Galana River is formed above the Lugard Falls by the confluence of the Athi and Tsavo Rivers. Along the rivers there are narrow gallery forests. Standing waters can be found at Mundanda Rock (natural damming through rock face) and at Aruba Dam, in addition to smaller water holes, often created by elephants. Parts of the park are of volcanic origin. A flat and extensive lava ridge, the Yatta Plateau, runs along the western boundary in the east of the Athi River. It is the longest lava field in the world.

Amazing experience with friends
The experience was Amazing, we saw many animals and had great time with our driver, Amos. I would recommend him to anyone, as he was very informative guide and skillful driver, who did everything so we could see all the animals. He had amazing eyesight and was very patient. During our 3-day adventure in TAITA hills and TSAVO we saw herds of elephants, giraffes, and buffalos, many different species of antelopes, warthogs, monkeys and baboons, a hippo, secretary birds, marabou storks, cheetahs, jackals, and lions. We couldn’t imagine a better safari! Plus, it was only a three of us in the car, so the whole experience was fitted to our needs and much more comfortable than usual. Plus – the food was very tasty, and the Salt Lick Lodge gave us a chance to see many species at the water hole at the same time!
Organised to a perfection… Thank you for accommodating our needs!!
Just came back from an amazing 3 day trip organised by Marco Polo. Totally recommended. We had a new large 4-wheel drive and all was organised to a perfection! From Diani our fantastic driver “Michael” drove us through Shimba-Hills where we watched the sunrise, the colours where spectacular with the red sandy hills and beautiful trees, with truly gorgeous landscapes!! We then headed to Tsavo West, Taita-Hills and stayed at the Sarova Salt Lick Lodge, where there’s a large water hole where hundreds of animals come. We had a specular view from our room and there’s a tunnel also where you can observe the animals or you can watch them from the restaurant during your meals or at the reception where there’s another water hole and you are a meter from the animals … It was just special & awesome!! We did various game-drives and saw so many animals & again it was special also due to the contrast of colours, red sand, blue sky with these net white clouds, and the variety of animals! We then headed to Amboseli on a very rocky road … we stayed at the Kibo Camp Site in a banda. It was just gorgeous!! Did more game-drives and saw loads of animals with Kilimanjaro Mountain in the background, really superb!! On the way back Michael, our driver took us on a diverse road to accommodate our needs, am so very happy to have selected Marco Polo once again!!!
We offer Safaris to Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Amboseli, Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha and Tanzania as group tours or private tours.
