The name of the park derives from the Tarangire River that crosses the park. The Tarangire River is the main source of fresh water for wildlife in the Tarangire Ecosystem during the annual dry season. The Tarangire Ecosystem is defined by the long distance migration of wildebeest and zebra. During the dry season, the Tarangire National Park concentrates thousands of animals from the surrounding dispersal and calving areas of the rainy season.
It covers an area of about 2,850 square kilometres
Among others, the Tarangire National Park is home to steppe zebras, blue wildebeests, impalas, waterbucks, small kudus, African buffalos, giraffes, hippos, warthogs, lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, African wild dogs, zebra mongooses, anubis baboons, southern green monkeys and 300 bird species. The black rhinoceros, once found in large numbers, is extinct. The number of elephants was 3000 from 1977 to 1987. In the Tarangire National Park including the Simanjiro area, over 5000 elephants were counted in May 1988 and over 6000 in the dry season. Another census resulted in 6110 individuals in 1987.
Since 2005, the reserve is considered a lion sanctuary.
