The small islands with the mountains in the background give the lake a wonderful panorama. Special are the remarkable bird populations that are omnipresent here.
Admire kingfishers, storks, ospreys and ibises. Goliath herons breed in particularly large numbers on Gibraltar Island. Bird watching excursions and boat trips are popular activities at Lake Baringo. The waters are also home to endemic cichlid species and numerous crocodiles. Hippos can often be seen on the shores.
Lake Baringo is located in the eastern part of the East African Rift Valley, in Baringo County in Kenya, about 285 km north-northwest of the capital Nairobi.
While for a long time the biggest concern of the people living around Lake Baringo was that it would shrink and thus no longer supply them with enough water, today the exact opposite is the case.
In the last seven years, the freshwater lake has increased by more than half.
The water level rose particularly sharply in 2020. Centimetre by centimetre, the water is rising and the lake is overflowing its banks more and more often, changing the shoreline day by day.
